Army researchers study nutrition requirements for high-altitude missions

NATICK, Mass. -- It's old news that warfighters conducting combat operations in mountainous regions like Afghanistan can experience significant loss of weight and muscle mass.

Yet the loss may not be due entirely to a lack of food or high physical activity levels. Hypoxia, a condition that leads to acute mountain sickness, or AMS, can play a major role in muscle loss during high-altitude missions.

Fort Leonard Wood grants child's wish, makes him Soldier for a day

Soldiers here helped an 11-year-old boy live out his dream when they made him an honorary Soldier Sunday.

Michael Kelsey, of Marshfield, Missouri, has wanted to be a Soldier since he was 5. He has even adopted the saying "superheroes don't wear capes, they wear dog tags." However, Kelsey will probably never realize his dream of becoming a Soldier because of a brain tumor, said Kelsey's mom, Eva Matthews.
