Some ‘Star Wars’ tech inspired by the Army’s experiments in mobility

The Army has a flying saucer — a real, honest-to-goodness flying saucer. It also has a jetpack, a hover car and an all-terrain walking vehicle. If that sounds like something out of a “Star Wars” movie, that’s because Hollywood is influenced by the Army’s experimental technologies.

Doctor comforts patients through music

The patient was just too agitated to stay in his bed. A World War II veteran with dementia, he kept changing out of his gown and trying to leave the inpatient floor.

Capt. Edwin Choi, the doctor on call at Madigan Army Medical Center, couldn't give him a sedative - it wouldn't react well with the man's dementia - but what he could do was play the guitar for him. So he spent an hour strumming classical music tunes as well as the songs of John Denver, the Beatles, the Eagles, and the Penguins, until the 82-year-old veteran fell asleep.

"I think music in itself is therapeutic," said Choi, who taught himself to play guitar in medical school.

Army Basic Instructor Course makes teachers out of trainers

Soldiers who attend the Army Basic Instructor Course, or ABIC, are usually experienced trainers, but many have difficulty translating their training skills to the classroom.

Sgt. Marcy DiOssi, who attended the 94th Training Division's 10-day ABIC on Fort Dix, New Jersey, said the course was an opportunity to get accustomed to the classroom and to gain confidence speaking in front of large groups of people.

"Most of my experiences are hands on in the field teaching Soldiers as a squad leader ... I'm really comfortable there," said DiOssi, 1/95th Engineer Battalion, Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. "In the classroom ... that's a challenge."
