The Army hockey team jumps back into league play this weekend


 The Black Knights are back in Atlantic Hockey play with a visit to Niagara for a pair of clashes on Friday and Saturday night. The Purple Eagles currently sit at the bottom of the league standings with a 3-13-2 conference record and have gone winless in their last seven games. They are 3-18-3 overall with their wins coming against American International, Bentley and RIT. Niagara traveled to Air Force last weekend and got swept by the Falcons. The Purple Eagles are allowing 3.62 goals per game, which is the most in the league. They have averaged just under two goals a contest and their power play has nine goals on 96 chances.

Army to go universal with UAS operator training

 The Army is working toward a universal control interface for unmanned aircraft systems, or UAS, that will help operators pilot more than one type.

"Probably one of the biggest and most impacting changes that we're looking forward to in our strategy is that of a universal operator and a universal control interface," said Col. Paul Cravey, Training and Doctrine Command capability manager for UAS.

Currently 15W Soldiers are trained on a singular platform, either the Shadow or the Gray Eagle, he said.

NFL Pro Bowlers Draft at Wheeler Army Airfield

 Partnered with the NFL, ESPN and USAA, Garrison, and the 25th Infantry Division hosted the 2016 Pro Bowl Draft in the 25th Combat Aviation Brigade's hangers on Wheeler Army Airfield, Jan. 28.

The draft party brought Soldiers, Airmen, Sailors, Marines, Coast Guard Personnel, family and friends together with the best NFL players in the country to celebrate the draft of this year's Pro Bowl teams.

"I'm a huge fan of football and I'm originally from San Diego, I grew up a Charger's fan," said Spc. Jason Gamache, 25th Infantry Division Soldier of the Quarter, 2-25 Aviation Regiment, "I'm a little disappointed to see them leaving San Diego but it doesn't make me any less of a fan."

Special operations intelligence specialists refine skills in combined training

 Paratroopers from the 173rd Airborne Brigade and the 10th Special Forces Group began Exercise Wolfenstein, a signal intelligence training event, Jan. 5, 2016.

The 22-day training focuses on developing the Low Level Voice Intercept, or LLVI, collection techniques of the military intelligence multifunction platoon of Company D, 54th Brigade Engineer Battalion, 173rd Airborne, which allows them to scan airwaves and hone in on radio, mobile phone or other transmissions during military operations.

Training to become an operating room specialist


The operating room specialist assists the nursing staff in preparing the patient and the operating room environment for surgery and for providing assistance to the medical staff during surgical procedures.

They also operate the centralized material service and are responsible for preparing and maintaining sterile medical supplies and special equipment for medical treatment facilities.

Job Duties

  • Provide assistance to the medical staff during surgical procedures to include the creation and maintenance of sterile fields for surgical procedures
  • Assist in preparing patients and operating room environment for surgery
  • Perform various preoperative and postoperative procedures as directed. This does not include the manipulation of tissue (e.g., cutting, suturing, cannulating, grafting, sawing or drilling)
  • Responsible for the sterilization process, which includes inspecting, cleaning, assembling, warping and sterilizing equipment

Training

Job training for an operating room specialist requires 10 weeks of Basic Combat Training and 19 weeks of Advanced Individual Training, which includes on-the-job instruction.
Some of the skills you’ll learn are:
  • Emergency medical treatment
  • Basic nursing care
  • Knowledge of the human body
  • Minor surgical procedures
  • Clinical laboratory procedures
  • Methods for diagnosing diseases

Soldiers provide facelift for 'winged Chinook'

 When one of Fort Rucker's longtime residents needed a facelift in the worst way, a high-priced plastic surgeon didn't rush in to save the day, it was nine Soldiers living the Army value of selfless service through volunteerism.

And the facelift turned out much better than it has for many Hollywood celebrities, but then more than 350 hours under various hammers, scrapers, sprayers, scrub brushes, screwdrivers and Army strong hands of the CH-47 flight engineers from B Company, 1st Battalion, 223rd Aviation Regiment can do great things for a 45-year-old aircraft parked outside at the mercy of Mother Nature's fury year after year.

Womack surgeons perform reconstructive microsurgeries

When most people think of plastic surgeons, cosmetic procedures like nose jobs and face lifts are what usually come to mind.

While the plastic surgeons at Womack Army Medical Center, WAMC, do perform limited cosmetic procedures, their primary focus is reconstructive and medically-necessary procedures. These procedures include those that restore function, correct a serious birth defect, restore body form after a serious injury, revision of disfiguring scars, or after a medically-necessary mastectomy.

Army helps to meet nutritional needs of Mars astronauts

 Traveling to the second smallest planet in the solar system can give you a big appetite, not to mention special nutritional needs.

Researchers in the Combat Feeding Directorate, or CFD, at the Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center, or NSRDEC, are working on two projects for NASA to help meet the nutritional needs of astronauts at a space station and astronauts traveling to Mars.

NASA contacted CFD researchers for their expertise and provided a grant for a vitamin stabilization project to help ensure the nutritional needs of astronauts are met during potential missions to Mars.

AMC leverages Army Reserve to save time, money

  The Army's highest-ranking logistics leader visited the largest mission command headquarters in the Army Reserve here.

Gen. Dennis L. Via, Army Materiel Command, or AMC, commander, visited the 377th Theater Support Command, or TSC, Jan. 9, a visit he said was long overdue.

"Whatever mission our Army has in the future, we cannot do it without the total force," he said during opening comments.

Much like AMC, the 377th TSC provides support to areas like activity sets, contracting, maintenance, transportation and air drop supply.

Maj. Gen. Les Carroll, commander of the 377th TSC, provided Via a command operations brief, explaining the unit's critical assets.

"We are your largest sustainment command," Carroll said. "We are responsible for 40 percent of the total Army's sustainment capability."

US Army holds All-American Bowl in San Antonio

 Tens of thousands of people made their way to the Alamodome to watch the 2016 U.S. Army All-American Bowl in San Antonio, Jan. 9.

"This was a once in a lifetime opportunity and I'm truly blessed to get the chance to be here," said Mark Jackson, West Team defensive end and a Cibolo, Texas, native.

For 16 years, the U.S. Army All-American Bowl has been the nation's premier high school football game, bringing together the nation's top high school players, which many have gone on to have successful college and professional careers. The bowl also highlights the top high school band members as well, who have gone on to receive ROTC scholarships.

That is the key message U.S. Army All-American Bowl Soldier mentors wanted to impart on the high school football athletes visiting the San Antonio-based Boysville, a residential care facility for children, Jan. 5. The players - the nation's young football elite - spent their post-practice afternoon challenging the elementary-aged children on their math skills in a friendly competition.

Army Emergency Relief aids bone marrow transplant

  Farah Flores was diagnosed with leukemia in February 2015. Her daughter, Bernadette Flores, said her mother had been misdiagnosed many times before, but this time the cancer was confirmed.

First female West Point commandant of cadets assumes new role

 For the first time in its history, the Army has installed a female officer as the commandant of cadets at the U.S. Military Academy, or USMA, at West Point, New York.

Brig. Gen. Diana M. Holland, herself a 1990 graduate of the school, assumed the role of commandant of cadets during a ceremony there, Jan. 5. She is the 76th officer to hold the position.
