Hispanic Army family proud of heritage, American citizenship

- The smell of patelitos wafts through the air as the Army logistician prepares his uniform for school. As they start their day, he, originally from Cuba, and his Honduran wife, reflect on the importance of their respective Hispanic cultures and on being U.S. citizens during National Hispanic Heritage Month.

Active Guard Reserve soldier Army Capt. Daniel Lopez-Guerrero is currently attending the Captains Career Course for the logistics branch and will be assigned to the 317th Military Police Battalion in Tampa, Florida, as the S4.

Daniel said his parents came to Miami from Cuba when they were very young at the beginning of the Cuban exile. They have been U.S. citizens for the past 40 years, living in Miami, where he grew up.

USA soccer kicks off Military World Games

USA goalkeeper Staff Sgt. Joshua Blodgett leaped, dove and used his head to block goals in the opening match of the Military World Games on Wednesday, but it wasn't enough to stop host-nation South Korea from prevailing 7-0.

The soccer match in downtown Mungyeong's Citizens Stadium was a much-anticipated event that kicked off what will be almost two weeks of international competition between more than 7,000 military athletes from 103 nations. The game took place a full two days before the official opening ceremony of the 2015 Conseil International du Sport Militaire, or CISM World Games. The games are held every four years.

The South Korean military team went into the first game heavily favored with a roster of athletes, who had played for various teams in the K League, or Korean professional league. In fact, the Sangju Sangmu Football Club of the Korean military plays teams in the K League year-round.

Natick developing new 'battlefield kitchen'

Mention "BK" to some people, and a certain fast-food establishment might come to mind. At the Natick Soldier Systems Center, however, those two letters refer to the latest in field feeding technology.

The Battlefield Kitchen, or BK, being developed in a cooperative effort between the Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center, or NSRDEC, and Product Manager Force Sustainment Systems, or PM FSS, is a self-contained, efficient mobile kitchen that can provide up to three hot meals daily to as many as 300 Soldiers during military operations. The BK can serve a full range of individual and group rations.
