Army Scientist simulates complex diesel injection mist with supercomputer

The ability to study complex interactions inside a diesel engine gives Army scientists a new perspective that may help design more fuel efficient and effective engines.

Using state-of-the-art supercomputers, Army scientist Dr. Luis Bravo led efforts to create simulations highlighting the first year of his project, allowing them to investigate the jet fuel spray breakup process with microsecond time fidelity and sub-millimeter resolution, while generating petabytes of data.

"The simulation captures the spray primary atomization in the near nozzle dense region using a realistic complex diesel injector," Bravo said. "As diesel sprays are mostly optically thick, the measurements in the dense region are restricted, and the present simulation provides a novel diagnostic method."

Army 101 teaches families about Soldier's life

Basic combat training might be an enormous challenge to a young Soldier, but it's also stressful for Family members. An online program helps Families learn about their Soldier's new lifestyle, and their participation can provide the Soldier-in-training a few extra benefits.

"It can give their son or daughter an extra 10 minutes on the phone," said Lt. Col. Mark Anders, 1st Battalion, 79th Field Artillery commander, "or we'll post their picture on Facebook, or do a shoutout video."

He calls it "Army 101."

Army Reserve competition defines best warriors

The Army Reserve Medical Command brought their top noncommissioned officers and Soldiers from all over the country to Fort Gordon, Georgia, March 6-11, 2016 to compete for the title of best warrior.

The competition tested the warrior skills of 3 Soldiers and 5 NCOs to determine whom among them deserved the titles of Soldier of the Year and NCO of the Year for their command.

"Soldiers have lost some of those basic combat skills that they need to be good NCOs and competitions like this help bring those skills back and test them," said Command Sgt. Maj. Marlo V. Cross, senior enlisted advisor for ARMEDCOM, headquartered out of Pinellas Park, Florida.

1945: First crew chief and flight engineer

Private First Class Emma J. Burrows

Before joining the Women’s Army Corps, Burrows-Windham majored in aeronautical engineering at the University of California. She held a civilian pilot's license and was credited with 349 flying hours. Burrows-Windham was the director of flying for the New Mexico Wing of Women Flyers when asked to join the WAC. She served in the European Theater of Operations where her wings were a matter of such curiosity that Military Policemen stopped her on the streets to ask her authority for wearing the air crew member's insignia. Windham earned her wings while stationed at Gore Field, Mo. Qualifying for the dual rating of crew chief and flight engineer, Windham completed many flights from Montana to Fairbanks, Alaska, and cross-country from Montana to Florida. She passed away, March 31, 1945, when the C-17 she was in collided with a C-47 over England.

Soldier qualifies for World Indoor Track and Field Championships

Spc. Paul Chelimo placed second in the U.S. Indoor Track and Field Championships 3,000-meter race, held March 11, in Portland, Oregon.

His time was 7:39:00 just a few hair-widths behind first-place Ryan Hill's 7:38:60.

However, coming in second is just about as good as first because only the top two of the 12 competitors get to go to the World Indoor Track and Field Championships later this week.

It should also be noted that Army Staff Sgt. John Nunn won the 3,000 meter race/walk as well. However, there's no World Indoor Championships for that event, but that's a huge accomplishment nonetheless.

Sky's the limit after breaking aviation ceilings

Not many Army second lieutenants in 1989 were flying fixed-wing aircraft, let alone serving as a pilot for the Army chief of engineers.

That year 2nd Lt. Angelia Farnell was also the first woman to serve in the aviation support unit at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, after the U.S. Army Engineer School and Center moved there.

"That was interesting ... to show up at a unit that didn't have female pilots," Farnell said, adding that all of the pilots were seasoned chief warrant officers, except for the commander who was a lieutenant colonel.

"The warrant officers gave me so much grief, because in their minds a second lieutenant should not have been flying airplanes."

She stood her ground, however, and proved her mettle flying UH-1H Hueys and the U-21 "Queen Air" fixed-wing aircraft. Soon she was asked to pilot the commanding general.

Rangers are smart, tough, courageous, and disciplined

Rangers are role model Soldiers – mentally, morally, and physically –  who use their minds as well as bodies to make sound judgments, reasoned decisions, and ultimately to never quit.  Rangers demonstrate discipline both on and off duty, and their Regimental standards are enduring.
When then Army Chief of Staff General Creighton Abrams envisioned the modern Ranger force, he emphasized the professional unit excellence stems from individual Ranger personal excellence and character.  He directed that "wherever the battalion goes, it will be apparent that it is the best".  Members of the 75th Ranger Regiment live this charter both personally and professionally every day.
