AH-64D Apaches arrive on Oahu

 The Soldiers of 2-6th Cavalry Squadron, 25th Combat Aviation Brigade, received their AH-64D Apache Longbow Attack Helicopters this week from National Guard units across the country.

The airframes are being transferred from the National Guard to the active duty Army as part of the Aviation Restructure Initiative in an effort to cut costs in Army Aviation and to fill the mission capability gap left by the retirement of the OH-58D Kiowa Reconnaissance Helicopter.

Army Baseball vs. Marist (11th Hudson Valley Baseball Classic).

A six-run sixth inning powered the Army West Point baseball team to an 8-3 victory over Marist in the 11th annual Hudson Valley Baseball Classic from Dutchess Stadium on Wednesday night.

With the win, the Black Knights (15-28) take a 6-5 advantage in the series.

The Simultaneous Membership Program

 The Simultaneous Membership Program allows you to attend Army ROTC and serve in the U.S. Army Reserve or Army National Guard at the same time. Marksmen aim their sights on Olympics in Rio

 UPCOMING OLYMPIANS?

Staff Sgt. George Norton won the men's 3-position event at the Smallbore Olympic Trials, April 1-8 at Fort Benning, but the USA did not have a spot secured yet for smallbore. However, if Norton wins one of the two air rifle Olympic seats in June at the Air Rifle event, he can also shoot in men's 3-position smallbore rifle event at the Olympics.

USAMU's Sgt. 1st Class Glen Eller has already earned a 2016 Olympic Team nomination in double trap through USA Shooting's Olympic points system as a result of his high finishes in international shooting sport events in the year prior to the Games that include his sixth-place finish at the World Championships and backed by his gold-medal performance at World Cup Gabala in 2015.

Sgt. 1st Class Michael McPhail of USAMU earned a spot on the Olympic team in Men's 50m Rifle Prone in the same manner as Eller. He won three gold medals in international shooting sport events in 2015.

Staff Sgt. Keith Sanderson of the U.S. Army World Class Athlete Program also qualified for the U.S. Olympic Team as a rapid-fire pistol shooter.

The next pre-Olympic event is the final Shotgun Olympic Trials in Tillar, Arkansas, May 16-25. The first was Oct. 16, 2015, in Tucson, Arizona.

Football Kicks Off Final Week of Spring Practice

 The Army West Point football team began its final week of spring practice at Howze Field under overcast conditions on Tuesday afternoon. The Black Knights worked out in shells during the 12th practice session of the spring.

Practice included various drills, including work in position groups and game-like scenarios.

Army Set for Rock 93.3 Hudson Valley Baseball Classic


 The Army West Point baseball team will look to take the series lead against Marist in the 11th Annual Rock 93.3 Hudson Valley Baseball Classic from Dutchess Stadium in Fishkill, N.Y., on Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 6:35 p.m.

US, South Korea Soldiers conduct large-scale river crossing exercise


 In the largest exercise of its kind in more than a decade, U.S. and South Korea Soldiers worked together, April 8, in a river crossing exercise involving both air and beach assaults, sectional pontoon bridges, helicopters, tanks, boats and many others, to cross the Imjin River.

Army Approves 22 Women to Commission as Infantry and Armor Branch Officers

 The Army approved requests from 22 women from the Army's three traditional officer accession programs - Officer Candidate School (OCS), Reserve Officers' Training Corps (ROTC) and the United States Military Academy (USMA) - to enter as 2nd Lieutenants into the Infantry and Armor branches. Thirteen will enter into the Armor branch and nine will enter into the Infantry branch in the coming weeks as commissioning and commencement ceremonies occur across the country.

Joint Task Force-Bravo firefighting ops wrap up in Panama

 Members of Joint Task Force-Bravo partnered with Panamanian Public Forces to contain multiple life-threatening wildfires here, April 17 and 18.

The fires, which are believed to have started April 4, grew exponentially, prompting the Government of Panama, via the U.S. Embassy in Panama, to request an aerial support package from JTF-B consisting of aircraft from the 1st Battalion, 228th Aviation Regiment, Soto Cano Air Base, Honduras, to help contain the blazes.

Cyber operations specialists execute defensive and offensive cyberspace operations


Requirements

Those who wish to serve must first take the Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB), a series of tests that helps you better understand your strengths and identify which Army jobs are best for you.

Training

Job training for a cyber operations specialist requires completing 10 weeks of Basic Combat Training and two phases of Advanced Individual Training (AIT). Phase one is located in Corry Station, FL for 24 weeks and phase two is located in Fort Gordon, GA for 24 weeks.

 For many centuries, the environment was something to be conquered. Initially, humankind focused on extracting Earth's resources solely for food, water and shelter. Then, the need for migration and expansion came upon us, leading to environmental challenges such as sprawl and the need for long-distance transportation. After some time, the Industrial Age was born and people discovered we could easily extract more of what we needed than ever before. This increased urbanization and intensified manufacturing activity. Also, changes in agricultural practices led to more pesticides and herbicides reaching waterways and contaminating the environment.

Picatinny Arsenal, NASA leverage partnership to share knowledge

 While military technology and space exploration may seem like two very different areas of expertise, there is enough common ground for engineers from Picatinny Arsenal and the nation's space agency to share best practices and leverage business processes.

Since January, Quality Assurance Engineer Ben Schumeg has been on a four-month special assignment supporting the Safety and Mission Assurance Directorate at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas.

Schumeg is employed by the U.S. Army Armament Research, Development and Engineering Center at Picatinny Arsenal.

Task Force War Eagle focus on operational readiness in Sinai

 Soldiers from Bull Troop, 1st Squadron, 2nd Cavalry Regiment "Task Force War Eagle" recently completed a week long training event, Operation Bull Run, April 12, 2016.

The exercise progressed from platform gunnery to platoon night live fire in only eight days. The purpose of Operation Bull Run was to certify the Response Platoon on mounted and dismounted personnel recovery operations.

Sky Soldiers, Joint Forcible Entry sets conditions at Saber Junction 16

 pproximately 1000 paratroopers from the 173rd Airborne Brigade, in cooperation with NATO Allies and partnered nations, blanketed the sky as they descended onto German soil. The massive personnel drop was a part of exercise Saber Junction 16 near the Hohenfels Training Area, April 12, 2016.

The international cohesion behind the airborne operation was as seamless as the landing. The British, Italian, and Polish also participated in the airborne operation. As soon as they landed, the paratroopers made their way toward the Short Takeoff Landing (STOL) strip with their brigade commander leading the charge.

The Army West Point football team was back out on Howze Field






The Army West Point football team was back out on Howze Field today under sunny skies and practiced in shells in its seventh practice of the spring.

The temperature was around 60 degrees at the start of practice as Army went through a stretch and split off into special teams groupings.

The Black Knights continued with positional drills and 1-on-1 work between receivers and defensive backs. The Defense got some work in alone as well, going through coverages and assignments.

Practice concluded with the offense and defense working on third downs. The drill started with 3rd-and-10 situations and finished with 3rd-and-5 plays.

Space and Missile Defense Command History: WGS-1 activated







 After six months of testing, the first Wideband Gapfiller Satellite, later renamed Wideband Global Satellite (WGS-1) was successfully activated. One day later, military satellite users in the West Pacific region transitioned from the Defense Satellite Communications System (DSCS), B9 communications satellite to this new state of the art WGS system.

Eight Gymnasts Head to NCAA Championships

The Army West Point gymnastics team has a date this weekend in Columbus, Ohio, for the NCAA Championships where the Black Knights will be looking to crown a champion or two along with cop All-America honors.Army will be competing individually at the two-day meet inside St. John Arena hosted by Ohio State on Friday, April 15th  and Saturday, April 16th.

65th Infantry Regiment receives Congressional Gold Medal

Puerto Rican Soldiers who fought with the 65th Infantry Regiment through America's conflicts going back to World War II were presented the Congressional Gold Medal in a ceremony on Capitol Hill, April 13.

Hosted by Speaker of the House Paul Ryan and other leaders from Congress, the Borinqueneers -- named after the original pre-Spanish word for Puerto Rico by the indigenous Arawak -- were honored for their pioneering military service, devotion to duty and their acts of valor since the unit's creation in 1920.

Even though the Borinqueneers were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in 2014 by President Barack Obama, the design of the medal was not finalized until the summer of 2015.
Today's ceremony unveiled the single-cast medal in Emancipation Hall at the U.S. Capitol. Replica coins will now be presented to all living Borinqueneers.

Black Knights Claim Four Weekly Awards

 Following a 15-4 win over Boston University on Saturday, the Army West Point men's lacrosse team nearly swept all Patriot League weekly honors.

Nate Jones was named the Patriot League Offensive Player of the Week and the Rookie of the Week after his five-goal performance against the Terriers. Classmate AJ Barretto took home his first weekly award as he was voted the conference's Goalie of the Week. Rounding out the award winners was senior Austin Schultz, who earned Defensive Player of the Week.

NCO named women's coach of year by USA Wrestling

 In front of more than 11,000 cheering fans, April 9, at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials for wrestling, Army Staff Sgt. Aaron Sieracki was recognized as women's coach of the year.

The assistant wrestling coach for the Army's World Class Athlete Program was voted the honor by USA Wrestling officials, athletes and fellow coaches. Over the past year, Sieracki has coached several Army women to championships.

The Best Ranger Competition 2016, is the 33rd anniversary of this grueling competition

From the very beginning, the objective was clear: the competition should place extreme demands on each buddy teams’ physical, mental, technical and tactical skills as Rangers. The standards of performance were to test the mettle of those Ranger-qualified Soldiers who dared to compete. The Best Ranger Competition was named in honor of Lt. Gen. David E. Grange Jr., former Ranger instructor and Ranger department director, and who, at one time, commanded Fort Benning, Ga., the 2nd Infantry Division, and the U.S. Sixth Army.
