Deep, dark dives

ARABIAN GULF - The low light, the dark night and the deep sea barely revealed the two silhouettes in the water. Two other figures firmly held their life lines at the bow of the boat.

As quickly as they had jumped in, the divers disappeared into the 180-foot deep water.

Army divers from the 86th Engineer Dive Detachment, from Fort Eustis, Virginia, trained overnight from Thursday, July 21, 2016 until the early morning light, Friday on the Arabian Gulf.

The Deep Blue Exercise training reinforced the leadership skills of the dive supervisors. The primary mission of the exercise was to certify leaders in diving medicine, emergency protocols and mission essential tasks.

Thunderbolt leaders tackle 'Mungadai,' a test of the modern warrior

For more than 11 hours on July 22 the leaders of the 308th Brigade Support Battalion, 17th Field Artillery Brigade, faced daunting physical and mental tests during a Mungadai challenge. Then they jumped out of a CH-47 Chinook helicopter.

Once the name of the elite soldiers of Genghis Khan's Mongol army, today the "Mungadai" is a grueling test of modern-day warriors that offers them a chance to build resiliency and develop agile and adaptive leaders

Realistic training leads to real-life preparedness

In a combat theater soldiers face small arms fire and exploding ordnance attacks, but for Reserve Soldiers it can be difficult to simulate these real world threats during monthly battle assemblies.

To achieve the most realistic training possible, Reserve units teamed up with Active Army and Army National Guard units here at Fort McCoy, Wisconsin for the 84th Training Command's third and final Warrior Exercise of the year, hosted by the 86th Training Division from July 9 through 23.

All-Army champ jabs his way to the 2020 Olympics

SCHOFIELD BARRACKS, Hawaii -- Walking into Pearlside Boxing and Fitness in Kapolei, Hawaii, amidst the smell of old sweat, worn leather, the swish-snap of jump ropes, speed bags, and '80s rock music, a modest champion can be found contributing to the daily grind.

Standing at about six feet tall, with a pleasant demeanor and almost awkward physique, this simple Soldier transforms into a machine of focus and power as he begins his regimen. Never stopping for more than a few seconds, the 21-year-old does not take his mind off the target: to become an Olympic champion.

Army reviews diversity in combat arms leadership

The Army has done a good job of increasing diversity in the force in terms both race and gender. But there's still work to be done.

At Fort Eustis, Virginia, July 12 through 14, the Army's Training and Doctrine Command convened the 2016 Army Diversity Summit to examine the reasons why the top tiers of leadership remain so homogeneous while much of the rest of the Army has become increasingly diverse. The summit was convened, in part, to solicit subject-matter experts for proposed solutions to the problem.

Soldiers prepare on tank simulators for Saber Guardian exercise

CONSTANTA, Romania - Soldiers from the 1st Combined Arms Battalion, 64th Armored Regiment used Bradley and tank simulators on Thursday, July 14, to conduct vital training prior to participating in Exercise Saber Guardian later this month.

"Before you can shoot the actual weapons, you have to qualify on the simulator," said Staff Sgt. Bill Stark, Delta Company, 1-64th AR. "We changed up our tank crews since our last gunnery range, so everyone needs to requalify on the simulators again."

While the simulator is not the same as being in a real tank, Spc. Jordan Hildreth, Delta Company, 1-64, said he enjoyed the experience.

Combat medic wins Pat Tillman award, raises disability awareness at 2016 ESPY awards

LOS ANGELES -- Sgt. Elizabeth Marks does not swim to win medals, reap accolades, or even earn a spot on the U.S. Paralympic Team.

"I don't chase medals," Marks said. "I chase experiences. I don't believe in stepping on a block or training and thinking about an object. I train thinking about friends that I've impacted along the way and strangers that I've gotten to impact along the way. That's the real prize. That's what it's all about for me."

Marks recently won four gold medals at the 2016 Invictus Games and has earned a berth in the 2016 Rio Paralympic Games. On Wednesday, July 13, she was honored at the 2016 ESPY awards before a national television audience with a Pat Tillman Award for Service.

Are we ready for the unseen fight?

An enemy soldier stood by his truck, communicating with his higher headquarters via radio. He was about to receive some critical information that would allow him to maneuver the members of his group against U.S.-friendly forces, but something unexpected happened.

Suddenly, there was nothing but garbled sounds and static coming through his receiver. He had lost his ability to communicate with other members of his unit, let alone his headquarters -- a severe handicap in battle.

The Soldiers are exhausted before they ever get on the mat.

Master Sgt. Raymond Alston, the U.S. Army Central combatives instructor, chides them on, talking to the students from the pushup position.

"You're still here?" Alston says.

All but two Soldiers have already dropped out of the formation and jog laps around the interior walls of the gym. It's 8 a.m. Monday, June 27, at Camp Arifjan, Kuwait, where the temperatures are already climbing to more than 120 degrees outside and bleeding into the workout area.
