Army computer scientist streamlines network science

ADELPHI, Md. (May 26, 2015) -- Through the efforts of a U.S. Army Research Laboratory, or ARL, computer scientist, the way in which network science experimentation environments are designed, deployed and executed has been streamlined.

Scientists now have the ability to create virtual experimentation environments, each automatically configured and tailored to their specifications, from their web browser.

The system at the forefront of this novel innovation is known as the Dynamically Allocated Virtual Clustering Management System, or DAVC.

DAVC is an experimentation infrastructure, which provides the means to dynamically-create, deploy and manage virtual clusters of heterogeneous nodes within a cloud computing environment based upon resource utilization such as central processing unit load, available random-access memory, or RAM, hard disk space and network utilization.

Soldiers participate during Flags In at Arlington Cemetery

After a long, unseasonably cold and wet day of conducting burial services, about 1,000 Old Guard Soldiers made their way across the soggy hills and flats that make up Arlington National Cemetery, Virginia, to place miniature flags in front of each grave marker, May 21.

Since 1948, the Soldiers of the 3rd Infantry Regiment, have conducted the tradition of Flags In a few days before Memorial Day to honor and remember those who served in the Armed Forces and those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

The Flags In mission was expected to take about four hours, from 4 to 8 p.m., or as one Soldier said, for "as long as it takes" to place the 228,000 red, white and blue miniatures around the 624-acre cemetery.

Soldier looks to take next step, challenge in career

Four years ago, Kevin Shinnick was looking for a challenge in his life that would push his physical and mental limits. Being from a small town in Milford, Massachusetts, he had one goal - to join the Army.

He was a member of the high school wrestling team, received "average grades," as he described, during school. So in 2011, Shinnick enlisted in the Army as an infantryman.

"Throughout my childhood, I was playing with my toy Soldiers, watching war movies," he said. "Having never had any family served in the military, my parents instilled a lot of patriotic values into me."

After completing one station unit training on Fort Benning, Georgia, Shinnick, now a sergeant, received orders to the 2nd Infantry Division out of Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington. Upon arrival, he noticed the Rangers from 2nd Ranger Battalion always conducting training on the airfield near where his unit was located.

During a 12-month deployment, Shinnick submitted a packet to attend the Ranger Assessment and Selection Program, or RASP, to become a member of the 75th Ranger Regiment. When he returned from his overseas stint, Shinnick went directly to Fort Benning.

"RASP was difficult, both physically and mentally challenging," Shinnick said. "You are required to work closely with everyone around you, trusting the guy next to you."

Upon graduation from RASP, Shinnick received orders to 3d Ranger Battalion. On arrival, Shinnick began training with his unit in preparation for a combat deployment to Afghanistan. He said his fondest memories, in the unit, were on that deployment because of the camaraderie he built with the men to his left and right.

The most effective leaders are those who "lead from the front"

Leadership is crucial to the success of the U.S. Army. The most effective leaders are those who "lead from the front" — this means they lead by example in thought, word and deed. Soldiers who choose Leadership Training are making it clear that they wish to take on more responsibility and thus rise in rank. The Army provides many opportunities for Soldiers to learn how to improve their leadership and teamwork skills.

Soldier leadership development

Soldiers Are Always Improving

As a Soldier, one of the most important things you can do is make sure your soldiering skills are finely tuned. And if you're a Soldier interested in promotion, you'll want to take part in ongoing training opportunities. There's a wide variety of training to choose from, including tactical, technical, physical and leadership development. Many of these opportunities allow you to practice your skills in the field as an individual and as part of a team.

 http://www.goarmy.com/soldier-life/being-a-soldier/ongoing-training.html

Building future Soldier leadership through broadening assignments

While enlisted Soldiers and noncommissioned officers, or NCOs, may have heard talk that diverse broadening assignments are in their Army futures, many do not know where to go for information and guidance on making them part of their career planning.

While such documents as Army Regulation-621-7 and AR-621-1 lay out guidelines for specific educational opportunities, there is no overarching policy or regulation equivalent to Department of the Army Pamphlet 600-3, published in late 2014.

However, broadening for enlisted Soldiers, a parallel concept, is "the purposeful expansion of an NCO's core military occupational specialty, or MOS, proficiency and leadership provided through diverse developmental positions, opportunities and assignments both within and outside their career management field," said Aubrey Butts, director of Training and Doctrine Command's Institute for Noncommissioned Office Professional Development.

Army to focus on cyber strategy in tactical environments

The Army is analyzing cyberspace requirements and outlining potential technical investments based on its Cyber Materiel Development Strategy, released in February 2015.

Doctrinal, operational, acquisition and research and development communities, for Army materiel development, worked together for more than two years on the comprehensive strategy, which looks at where Army cyberspace capabilities are and what lies ahead.

"The Army must be prepared to operate and fight within the cyberspace domain," said Assistant Secretary of the Army for Acquisition, Logistics and Technology Heidi Shyu. "It is essential … that we use our limited acquisition and science and technology resources to identify and address critical Army specific problem sets and capability gaps. Where possible, we must leverage the best solutions and ideas available through our partnerships and collaboration within the Department of Defense, other government agencies, industry and academia."
