SAN ANTONIO (Oct. 7, 2014) -- Participants in the 30th anniversary
running of the Army Ten-Miler are encouraged to honor fallen Service
members and their families through a social media campaign called "Run
to Honor."
Army-Ten Miler weekend begins Oct. 10, with an expo at the D.C. Armory,
which continues Oct. 11. The Oct. 12 race starts and finishes at the
Pentagon, where the runners will be surrounded by a sea of "Hooah!"
tents displaying promotional materials from garrisons Army-wide.
Survivor Outreach Services, part of the U.S. Army Installation
Management Command Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation division,
urges runners, friends and family members to download a "Run to Honor"
sign template and post photos from race weekend on Facebook or Twitter
with a #RuntoHonor hashtag.
In this "selfie" era of instant gratification and instantaneous
documentation, anyone with a smartphone can make instant "news." The
Army-Ten Miler is a suitable venue for runners and spectators alike to
honor those who gave their all, IMCOM officials said.
The Run to Honor campaign is part of an IMCOM initiative to increase
awareness of the meaning of the gold star, which is used to signify the
loss of a loved one in service to their country. Attending the Army-Ten
Miler is not necessary to participate, officials said.
